Celebration of Cultures

Since 2016, the Community Relations Commission has held an annual "Celebration of Cultures" event in partnership with the North Suburban YMCA. In 2017, the Northbrook Public Library joined and held an international film festival during the month of April. This page overviews the event and ways to get involved for the 2018 event.

The 2018 Event

The 2018 Celebration of Cultures will be held on Sunday, May 6 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the North Suburban YMCA (2705 Techny Road).

Schedule of Events:

Food Trucks With International Cuisine: Noon

Food trucks 5411 (Argentinian Empanadas) and Bombay Wraps (Indian wraps) will be open starting at noon and have food for sale.

Korean Book Display and Story Time: Noon

Local storyteller Sujin Song will be displaying Korean books and holding a story time. The Korean book displays and station will be open from noon to 1:00 p.m. with the story time being held at 12:30. 

Cricket Demonstration by the Greater Chicago Cricket Association: 1:00 p.m.

The Greater Chicago Cricket Association (GCCA) will be providing a demonstration of the game of cricket at 1:00 p.m. as part of the Celebration. Cricket is a very popular game throughout the world and GCCA will also hold a clinic for any interested players.

Cultural Stations from Across the World: 1:00 p.m.

Come explore the diversity of the North Shore by visiting our Cultural Stations, which will all be open by 1 p.m. This year's Celebration includes stations from across the world each offering opportunities to learn about their culture and see artifacts and displays. Some tables will also have free snacks and sweets to sample. 

Returning this year by popular demand: The Oakton Muslim Student Association will have a Henna station opening at 1:00 p.m.

Local Cultural Performers: 1:15 p.m.

Local cultural performers including Northbrook's own Campanella Children's Choir as well as Rucha Deshpande, an Indian dance performer, and the Bulta Korean Music Ensemble will be performing beginning after 1:15 p.m.

Come see "Follow the Butterfly" by the Chicago Folklore Ensemble: 2:00 p.m.

The Chicago Folklore Ensemble will perform their show "Follow the Butterfly" featuring music and stories from Amazonia, Appalachia, Rajasthan (India), Nigeria and Thailand beginning at or around 2:00 p.m. in YMCA's Gym. This is a free, two-hour concert and performance and is open to all ages.

2018 International Film Series to be held in June!

Due to popular demand, the 2018 International Film Series will be returning this year during the month of June. Details will be posted on the Library's website as they become available.
