Project Description

This project consists of pavement widening on Skokie Boulevard and Sunset Ridge Road. The pavement widening included in this project will create a new dedicated right-turn only lane on Sunset Ridge to southbound Skokie from the intersection as well as dedicated left-turn only lanes on Skokie at Sunset Ridge. This work will be largely contained to the area between 899 to 1001 Skokie and from 1000 Sunset Ridge to its intersection with Skokie.

Additionally, as part of this project, the developer will install new storm sewer and sidewalks and a new traffic signal at 1135 Skokie and complete pedestrian improvements at the intersection of Skokie and Sunset Ridge.

Two-way traffic and local business access will be maintained throughout this project.

Project Locations

The project will be limited to the areas immediately surrounding the intersection of Skokie and Sunset Ridge with pavement widening occurring mostly between 899 to 1001 Skokie and from 1000 Sunset Ridge to its intersection with Skokie. Sidewalk installation will take place between the intersection of Skokie and Sunset Ridge and 899 Skokie. See a map of this project at this link.

Current Project Update

November 11, 2017

The 1000 Skokie developer’s contractor has identified utility lines that are in conflict with the proposed infrastructure for this project. As a result, the developer’s engineer met with the utility companies to determine required changes. Based on those discussions, work is not expected to proceed this year due to the conflicts and colder weather. The contractor will install the required traffic control devices, hotmix asphalt at the driveways to Dania Furniture, and clean up the area for the winter.Previous Project Updates

This week, the 1000 Skokie developer’s contractor closed a northbound lane of Skokie Boulevard to remove the parkway area for pavement widening to accommodate the storm sewer and curb installation. The contractor has identified unexpected utility lines that are in conflict with the proposed infrastructure and the developer’s engineer is working on options to resolve these issues. While this work occurs, driveway closures will be staged to allow access to all businesses.

This week, the developer’s contractor began installing a temporary signal at the intersection of Skokie Boulevard and Sunset Ridge Road in anticipation of upcoming work in the area. The temporary signals are scheduled to be activated on September 28 and the existing signals will be removed. Roadway widening is expected to begin the first week of October.

This work is being done as part of the larger 1000 Skokie project and includes improvements to the intersection of Skokie and Sunset Ridge, as well as the installation of a new traffic signal at the entrance of the development and pedestrian improvements along Skokie.
