Demonstration Gardens at Village Hall

wide image arch

In early 2022, the Village approved a contract agreement with local Northbrook business The Organic Gardener to construct and maintain a demonstration vegetable garden between Village Hall and the Library. This “Grow Northbrook” project is one of the Board’s selected top priorities from the Climate Action Plan, to foster community while growing healthy and sustainable food. Harvest is donated to the Northfield Township Food Pantry.

Education

The Organic Gardener hosts monthly Open Garden Sessions free to residents to educate on best practices for eco-friendly gardening. Drop by the Garden between 2-3:30 p.m. to help with garden tasks to care for the garden, ask the gardener questions or just enjoy the beautiful garden. All 2025 Open Garden dates are complete, please check back in the spring for the 2026 dates.

If you have a group that would like to drop in for Open Garden Hours please contact the Sustainability Coordinator at sustainability@northbrook.il.us or 847-664-4134 to make arrangements.

Village Hall Demonstration Rain Garden

rg

The Village hopes to lead by example in restoring Northbrook's natural landscape qualities to conserve water and promote pollinators. The garden began in 2011 and is currently being revitalized.   Fall 2020 updates on this project are provided here. Any time is a great time to begin planning your native garden. Residents are encouraged to use this guide to native garden planning to get started on transforming your outdoor space into a corridor for wildlife!

Private Property Cost Share Drainage Program

Residents that qualify for the Village's cost-sharing stormwater improvement program may have the costs for the installation of a rain garden offset.  If interested in having the Village partially subsidize your rain garden, please contact the Public Works Department at 847-272-4711.
