2024 – Dundee Road Water Main Improvements

Project Description:

This project will focus on the replacement of critical transmission water main that was originally installed in the 1960's on Dundee Road between Western Avenue and Meadow Road.  This main will be installed primarily using trenchless methods to cross the West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River as well as the Metra Rail Corridor.  Connections will be made to existing water mains near the intersections of Dundee Road and Ash Lane, Fair Lane, and Meadow Road.   

Enabling Resolution:

This project is expected to be considered during the January 23, 2024 Board of Trustees regular meeting.   Resolutions will be provided here once they become available.

Current Project Update

Friday, June 14

This week, the newly installed transmission main was brought into service. Additionally, the contractor completed landscaping areas impacted by the project, performed site cleanup, and de-mobilized.  While minor punch list items remain, work on this project is substantially completed.

Friday, June 7

This week, the contractor chlorinated and flushed the newly installed water main.  Water samples were taken from the newly installed watermain; if satisfactory results are returned, the main will be brought into service early next week.

Next week, the contractor intends to complete landscaping areas impacted by the project, cleanup the site, and de-mobilize.

Friday, May 31

This week, the contractor will continue bringing the newly installed water main into service, and continued site restoration.

Next week, the contractor intends to complete bringing the newly installed water main into service, and begin landscaping areas impacted by the project.

Friday, May 24

This week, the contractor continued bringing the newly installed water main into service. Additionally, they connected the new water main to the old water main at Fair Lane and Meadow Road and began site restoration.

Next week, the contractor will continue bringing the newly installed water main into service and continue site restoration.

Friday, May 17

This week, the contractor began bringing the newly installed water main into service. Additionally, the contractor began abandoning old infrastructure at Ash Lane and Dundee Road.

Next week, the contractor will continue to bring the newly installed water main into service.  Additionally, they will connect the new water main to the old water main at Fair Lane and Meadow Road.

Friday, May 10

This week, the contractor began connecting the newly installed water main to the existing water main in the north parkway on Dundee Road.  There was a daytime lane closure for westbound traffic while work was being performed in the north parkway.

Next week, the contractor will begin bringing the newly installed water main into service.  Additionally, the contractor will begin abandoning the old infrastructure at Ash Lane and Dundee Road. 

Friday, May 3

This week, the contractor connected the segment of main from under the railroad tracks to the intersection of Dundee Road and Meadow Road.  Additionally, they began installing water main across Dundee Road near Meadow Road.  The Meadow Road southbound closure was reopened to traffic.

Next week, the contractor intends to perform connections of the newly installed water mains to the existing water main in the north parkway on Dundee Road.  There will be a daytime lane closure for westbound traffic while work is being performed in the north parkway.

Friday, April 26

This week, the contractor prepared for installation of new water main under Dundee Road from Meadow Road, and continued installation of water main towards Meadow Road from the railroad tracks.

Next week, the contractor will prepare for connecting the new water main to the old water main on the north side of Dundee Road. The northerly westbound lane of Dundee Road will be closed during working hours.

Friday, April 19

This week, the contractor completed installation of water main across Dundee Road near Ash Lane.  Additionally, they completed installing water main connections at the intersection of Dundee Road and Fair Lane.  

Next week, the contractor will connect the segment of main from under the railroad tracks to the intersection of Dundee Road and Meadow Road.  Additionally, they will begin installing water main across Dundee Road near Meadow Road.  Southbound traffic on Meadow Road near Dundee Road will be restricted for approximately two weeks while water main is installed at the intersection.

Friday, April 12

This week, the contractor began installing water main across Dundee Road near Ash Lane.  Additionally, they began installing water main connections at the intersection of Dundee Road and Fair Lane.  

Next week, the contractor will continue drilling operations on Ash Lane, as well as installing water main connections at Fair Lane.

Friday, April 5

This week, the contractor completed drilling operations to install the new water main between Fair Lane and Ash Lane. They installed the water main under the river by pulling the fused pipe through the drilled shaft on Thursday, April 4^th. Additionally, they continued installation of the water main under the railroad. 

Next week, the contractor will complete installation of new water main under the railroad tracks and will install water main connections at Fair Lane. Additionally, they will begin directionally drilling water main under Dundee Road near Ash Lane.

Friday, March 29

This week, the contractor continued drilling operations to install the water main between Fair Lane and Ash Lane. Additionally, they began trenchless installation of the new water main under the railroad tracks. During a recent visit this week to the construction site, it was determined that, due to the work area's proximity to the road, the lane closure cannot be removed at the end of each workday as initially planned. Safety is a top priority in all construction projects and we anticipate completing the phase of the project causing the full-time lane closure within the next couple of weeks. We will then transition to requiring only daytime closures until all the main pipe work is finished by the first week of May.

Next week, the contractor intends to complete drilling operations to install the new water main between Fair Lane and Ash Lane.  They intend to install the water main under the river by pulling the fused pipe through the drilled shaft on Wednesday, April 3rd.  Finally, they intend to begin installing the water main towards the intersection of Dundee Road and Meadow Road.

Friday, March 22

This week, the contractor began drilling operations to install the water main between Fair Lane and Ash Lane. Additionally, they excavated bore pits to begin installing water main under the railroad tracks between Meadow Lane and Ash lane.   

Next week, the contractor intends to continue drilling operations to install the new water main between Fair Lane and Ash Lane. Additionally, they will begin the trenchless installation of the new water main under the railroad tracks between Meadow Lane and Ash lane.

Friday, March 15

This week, Ash road access to Dundee road was closed; additionally the contractor began mobilization, clearing, and excavation of drilling pits to prepare for drilling operations.  

Next week, the contractor intends to begin drilling operations to install the new water main between Fair Lane and Ash Lane.  

Friday, March 8

Next week, the contractor intends to continue mobilization of materials and equipment along Dundee Road.  They will also begin excavating the drilling and receiving trenches required for the water main installation.

A closure of Ash Lane access to Dundee Road will begin on Monday, March 11.  This closure is anticipated to last through May.
